Research at It's best....

So last night we started the one experiment that requires us to be in the water at night. We are exploring the effects of light intensity on the ostracod displays. So there was the construction of the contraption to hold the lights (thanks Andy, Magi, and Katy) and the laying of a few quadrats at 10m, 20m, and 30m from the light... and we floated on the surface and counted the number of ostracod displays every 10 minutes for 5 minutes. It was interesting to compare the displays from the previous evening, definitely a lot less displays in a given time period than the previous evening.

During the first time trial, I got hit in the face by a jelly fish.... to tentacles, but the big Jelly part..... right in the mouth!! Blech! To give you a vision of what it looked like, imagine getting hit with a giant (about 6 inches across) peeled grape that when it hit you, left some jelly behind. Needless to say, in the second it took me to realize what it was, there was a bit of a panic, and then a mad brushing it off my face.

But, that was nothing a few minutes in the hammock couldn't cure!
